Boho Chic/Boho Style

What does Boho Chic mean?

First of all, let’s start by dissecting the syllables. Boho is a shortened form of Bohemian which is where the style originated and Chic can be translated from french to mean elegant or stylish.

What is Boho style/Boho Chic?

The Boho style or Bohemian style differs from any mainstream trends from any time, and therefore is an alternative style. Over 200 years ago the term ‘bohemian’ referred to an exotic style that was often linked to eccentric artists. Boho style draws on bohemian and hippie influences consisting of long flowing dresses, tunics and tiered skirts. Often accompanied by accessories such as: embroidery, wooden jewelry, handbags and sandals.
Most elements of the Boho Chic style gained its popularity in the 1960s, and has fluctuated its popularity over the years. Until the 1990s, where the Boho style has maintained staying in fashion due to celebrities giving the trend significant exposure. Celebrities such as Sienna Miller, Kate Moss and Mary-Kate Olsen all add to this list.

How the Boho Chic look started?

The first recognition of Boho style dates back to the end of the 18th century, at the time of the french revolution. Designers were living in poverty conditions caused by the economy which meant they had to resort to old clothing as supplies. This started their creative vision and when the economy stabilized, the artists had more financial freedom. Moreover, the artists began delving into all sorts of eccentric fashion styles. These designers had a tendency to dress similarly to nomadic gypsies from Eastern Europe, specifically from the region of Bohemia. This led to the phrase ‘bohemian’ becoming associated with artistic value, creativity and rebellion.
